The project started with a simple opportunity: many VR systems still depend on external hardware, more space, or a longer setup process than casual users want. Mantis responds to that with a compact headset concept built around integrated sensing and a cleaner overall form.
The headset was designed with two wide-angle cameras intended to support AR use and base-station-free body tracking as part of the concept. A 130-degree display was specified to widen the field of view and create a more enclosed visual experience. The overall form was kept smooth and minimal to make the product read more like a resolved consumer electronics proposal than a rough sci-fi sketch.
Comfort was a key part of the design. The headset uses a broad adjustable strap and a deep padded face seal to improve fit and distribute load more evenly. Neoprene was proposed for the strap because it is flexible, durable, and better suited to repeated contact with sweat and skin oils than a basic textile band.
